You Are Not That Awesome

October 5, 2018 by i5lwl

“Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance? Who has measured the Spirit of the LORD, or what man shows him his counsel?” Isaiah 40:12-13

Reflect

“You are capable!” “You are awesome!” “There is none like you!” Why do we constantly tell ourselves these things in an effort to bolster self-esteem?

Are you special? Yes! Are you supremely important, incomprehensible, and meant to be autonomous? No, I’m sorry, but you are not. If you became offended by my last sentence, let me challenge that perhaps it is because, in your sinful nature, you have a rebellious desire to possess attributes which belong to God alone. And let me then say that your limits are actually good and meant to point you to the One who is limitless and incomprehensible. God lovingly created you with limits. What freedom you can have by embracing your limitedness and resting in the limitless One!

My first child is due this November. While I want her to know how very loved she is by her Creator, I do not plan on bolstering her confidence in how unique and awesome I think she is. Rather, I want her to find confidence in God alone. I want her to humbly acknowledge her imperfections, inabilities, and deficiencies. I want the awareness of her limits to drive her to gaze upon her Creator. This awareness should result in being filled with the wonder and awe of an incomprehensible, perfect, self-sufficient God who sent His own Son to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Sister, do you realize how freeing this is? Be still and know He is God, and you are not. Find rest and freedom in your parameters, and use them as a means to glorify the infinite God we serve!

Pray

Lord, there is no one like You! I praise You for being everything I need and for creating me to lean upon You. I praise You for sending Your Son to die on my behalf. Forgive me for my weak attempts to assign attributes to myself and others that only You can have. Help me to embrace my limitations and use them to glorify Your holy name. Help me to rest in You alone so that I may be set free and enjoy you forever.

Your Turn

Memorize Exodus 15:11.
