“Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you will remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away, but you are the same, and your years have no end.” Psalm 102:25-27
God is immutable—unchanging in His thoughts, will, decrees, character, and purposes. Though the things of this world change, shift, fade, and pass away, God never does. Our friends and family may grow and change (whether for good or for bad), but God never ceases to be Himself. He has always existed and has always been the same. God is the same loving God in the New Testament as He was in the Old—and as He still is today. The three Persons of the Godhead have existed together. Everything else in this world will change in some way, but God never will.
Though life may appear as an unpredictable storm, we can cling to the Rock who will never crumble, never move, and never change. You may not know what tomorrow, next week, next month, or next year will look like, but you can trust that God will continue to show you grace, patience, and love. You may lose your loved ones and all that you treasure on earth, but God has no end.
When anxiety begins to escalate in your heart about the uncertainty of the future or how people will respond to you, take courage knowing God is certain. No matter what happens, you can believe He will be the same. The same God who saved you from condemnation and death is the same God who stands by you in the midst of your trial. The same God who showed you grace when you were a rebellious sinner is the same God who saw you sin today. When all else is shifting, find courage in the God who remains.
God, You are immutable, unchanging, forever constant. I don’t know what tomorrow will look like — or next week, or next month — and that stresses me because I like predictability and consistency. I am overwhelmed by the ever-changing world around me and the lack of regularity my life has right now. Please help me to take refuge in Your immutability. Help me to rest in you as my solid Rock.
