Training Up Our Children in the Way of the Lord

February 7, 2019 by i5lwl

“And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Reflect

My husband and I are expecting our first child this year. While we are so thankful and already so in love with our little one who is growing more and more each day, there is a weightiness that comes to mind ever so often. As Christians, we will be raising a child in a society that rejects God and His ways. There is a nervousness that comes with this, I dare to say, and sometimes, I find myself looking at my belly and mourning over the evils our child may witness.

But ladies, we still have a task, don’t we? We are told to raise a child up in a way that he or she should go (Proverbs 22:6), and the things we teach them will stay with them. We must be willing to follow our Savior’s will in raising children unto the Lord. This doesn’t just go to mothers, but any woman who has a realm of influence with children.

The world and the enemy of our souls will do everything it can to sway our hearts and the hearts of our little ones away from God. From the time they are born, they know nothing of the goodness, the mercies, and the salvation of the Lord. We must teach the full counsel of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17). We will be held accountable for this.

Children are an heritage from the Lord (Psalm 127:3). They must understand they are in need a Savior, just as much as you are. And take heart, though God has given you children, He will not leave you on your own to steward them well. He will be with you in the highs and lows, the ups and downs, and the good and the bad. Your children are in His hands, no matter the outcome (Psalm 78:4).

Pray

Lord, thank You for the heritage of children. Thank You for godly mothers and fathers who are submitting to You in raising them up in Your word and way. Give us the strength we need to care for their souls along with their lives. You are good. Please save our children at an early age for Your glory and their good. In Christ’s name, Amen.

Your Turn

What are you doing to influence your children in the way of the Lord? What do they know about the Biblical and real Jesus?
