The Overgrown Wilderness and Barren Desert

May 3, 2017 by i5lwl

Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. — Isaiah 43:19 ESV

Reflect:

“God won’t give you more than you can handle.” Typically this is murmured softly to comfort and care for the suffering.  We want to make sense of the senseless in a world broken by sin. Somehow I turned a misunderstood, casual translation into Gospel truth. Sure, things will get hard, but not so hard I can’t handle it on my own. False. God allows more than we can handle. Hardship loosens our grip of the idol of self-reliance to be able to reach for the only One we can truly rely on. Isaiah teaches us to look for Him in the hard moments. God is always there, turning the broken beautiful.

Take comfort in the reality you as a child of God walk in. There are devastating things in our world and in our lives, but He is not moved by them. Our God sees to it that the overgrown wilderness or barren desert path we walk now will not remain our path forever. Difficulties direct our eyes from our circumstances to the God reigning over our circumstances. All praise to the One who makes a way in the wilderness and a river in the desert!

Pray:

Father, thank You for the hard times that teach me to trust You. I may not see path or river yet, but I know You’ll provide. I love You so much! Amen.

Your turn:

What wilderness path or desert river has He recently provided for you?

How can you point others to the paths and rivers He’s making for them in their lives today?
