The Destruction of One Lie

August 24, 2018 by i5lwl

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” Genesis 3:1

Reflect

“Did God actually say…?”

One lie. Because of this single lie, sin entered the world. And with it came all the pain, suffering, and sickness we see today.

I’ve never witnessed the true destruction of sin more closely than through the experience of losing our unborn babies. When death touches the womb, you can no longer hide or cover it up. You can’t put makeup on it. It has happened within you. The truth remains that if Eve hadn’t taken the bait many centuries ago, the ruin of the world would not exist. Mothers wouldn’t lose their children, wives wouldn’t lost their husbands, and cancer wouldn’t eat at the lives of our loved ones. Death would not exist.

This should caution the believer in a couple ways. Firstly, there is no such thing as a “white lie”.

“A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin.” Proverbs 26:28

We must recognize we can bring destruction upon ourselves and others through our deceit. If one lie brought sin and death into the world through its tempting of Eve, who are we to think our lies would not cause the same sort of ruin? Secondly, we mustn’t take the bait from the deceiver. He seeks to destroy our souls. Let us learn the self discipline of discernment. We must immerse ourselves in the truth found in God’s word in order to recognize and flee from the lies thrown our direction. None of us are immune to the deceitful schemes of the devil.

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” Ephesians 6:10-13

Pray

God, we are so prone to listening to the lies the devil, world and our own flesh place before us. Grow us in wisdom and discernment and help us to put on our armor that we may flee from them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Your Turn

Ponder your thoughts. Are you believing any lies today? Do your thoughts match up to the truth found in the Word of God? If not, put them off and think on what is true.
