The Crippling Fears of Motherhood

August 24, 2018 by i5lwl

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” Psalm 56:3

Reflect

Lately, fear and the pressure of certain expectations have been ruling my mind. I wake up in cold sweats dreading labor and the pain it will bring. I fear something terrible will happen to my baby boy before I get to see him grow. Doubts of my calling as a mom linger as I think about how my life is going to change in just a few short weeks.

I know there are so many women out there who are fighting these same fears…and thankfully, we don’t have to battle them alone. What brings me comfort in this time of uncertainty is the Gospel of Christ. As it says in Psalm 56:3, when worries become crippling, we are to put our trust in the only One who knows our futures.

I know I’m going to fail as a mom; I won’t know all the answers or have it all together. But yet, I praise God for this – if it were in my hands, I undoubtedly would mess everything up. Our perfect Savior has our children, our worries, and every aspect of our lives in His hands. He is conforming us to the image of Him, and this, sisters, is something to rejoice about. Our daily sanctification as mothers is helping our children see and cherish Christ…it is laying our selfish desires at the foot of the cross and tending to our children instead. And we can take on motherhood knowing God is walking hand-in-hand with us each step of the way.

Pray

Father, I place my worries and fears in Your hands. I know I will fail as a mom, but because of Your grace and mercy, I don’t have to walk this path alone. I pray I am conformed to Your image every single day, and I pray my children see Your love and mercy in my actions and parenting. In Christ’s name, Amen.

Your Turn

As a mother, do you worry about your children, their sanctification, or just their well-being? Take time to meditate on Psalm 56 and ultimately trusting in God. Our worries and anxieties have nothing on our Heavenly Father.

If you aren’t a mom yet, encourage one today. Tell her how loved she is. Pour Christ into her life.
