By now you’ve seen in the previous chapters it is only by faith any of us are saved, for none of us are good (Romans 3:10). Romans 5 continues this discussion by explaining how we are justified by faith and what that means for our standing before the Father.
Peace with God
You and I were named among the “children of wrath” spoken of in Ephesians 2. Because of Adam, we were all born spiritually dead. Our hearts and minds are bent toward rebellion, and our hands are grasping at every thought of sin. We hated God, and we hated His commandments. But this is no longer the story of those who have been washed by the blood of the Lamb.
We now have peace with Almighty God.
“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:1
Jesus, the “second Adam”, died on our behalf while we were still sinners, so that we would be justified before the Father and spared from His wrath (Romans 5:8-9). He now sees the righteousness of His Son when He looks at us.
Praise the Lord! We have been reconciled to God! And none of it was our doing, but wholly a work of Christ.
Access to His Grace
“Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” Romans 5:2
This promise makes my heart sing. Not only do we have access to saving grace through Christ, but even grace for our daily struggle against sin! This is huge, friends! We’ll see in chapter 6 just how amazing this truth is, but for now, know that through Jesus, we can boldly approach the throne of God in our time of need (Hebrews 4:16).
Death No Longer Reigns
Through Adam, sin and death came to all people and reigned among us, making us slaves. But Jesus has conquered the grave, brought us life, and changed our hearts.
“For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:17
One man led us to condemnation, while the other led us to justification by faith in Him. It’s true, friends, that love wins. The love of God in sending His Son, the love of Christ in dying on the cross, and the love the Spirit places in our hearts, for God and His ways has crushed sin and death. The battle is fixed, though for now the war rages on. Jesus is coming back, and when He does, we will see the full fruition of God’s plan. And I assure you, love wins, life wins. Praise God!
“Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 5:20-21
