Relationships and Our Relational God

December 25, 2017 by i5lwl

“The LORD God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.'” Genesis 2:6 NIV

Reflect

When I read over this passage of Scripture in my own personal devotional time, I saw and imagined the scene that is illustrated here as I have before when reading this. God brought forth the animals to the creature He had commanded to rule and subdue the Earth and all that dwell within it–the man, Adam. Mind you, I have read this passage and beheld the scene in the words, but this was the first time I had truly taken notice of what God has said and what He was doing. God spoke to a relational desire He had already planned to fulfill–it was not good for Adam to be alone.

We human beings are relational creatures. God made us that way. A part of reflecting His image is that we are given a desire to form relationships with other human beings. We see the perfection of a relational union when we behold the Trinity as the Father, the Son, and the Spirit are always in perfect unity (John 10:30).

Did Adam need a wife to be complete? No. He was already whole in God. The most important relationship a human being can have is the right one with his or her Creator. Because of the rebellion that took place later in that very same garden, the greatest intimacy and wholeness someone could experience in a relationship was broken…and until a person comes to know Christ Jesus through saving faith by grace, that person continues to be alienated. In retrospect, such individuals do not truly know what it means to be relational in a sense that reflects the goodness, purity, and love God intended for relationships. Only in Christ can one truly have the right relationship with God and even with others (John 14:6, 1 John 3:14-15).

Sister, you may have a desire to be married. You may have a desire to have a closer group of friends you can relate and share your struggles with. You may have a desire to have a family to love and care for and will do the same for you in turn. Can I share with you that those desires aren’t bad? It is what we do with those desires and how we seek to find fulfillment that will be a tale tell sign of the danger of idolatry in your heart and mine. You were created to be relational, but your sole purpose in life is to glorify the One that you were created for. Christ is your Bridegroom (Revelation 19:7). He is your Friend that sticks closer than any brother (Proverbs 18:24). In Him, you are now a born again child of God, placed into a heavenly family with an imperishable seed (1 Peter 1:23). Adam didn’t need Eve to be complete, and you do not need others to be complete either, but what a precious gift she was to him, and what a precious gift our relationships can be to us. May all our God-given relationships be a testament to God’s faithfulness and grace in our lives…and may we seek our relationship with Him above all else.

Pray

Heavenly Father, because of Your Son whom You have sent, we have redemption and salvation. May we seek to cherish Christ as we cherish You, by the power of the Spirit. And may we find fulfillment in You before others, and see those You have called us to form bonds with as precious gifts from a loving God. In Christ’s name, Amen.

Your Turn

Is your relationship with God your primary focus? Do you have desires for relationships with others that are not fulfilled? Meditate on Matthew 6:33, and find your fulfillment in Christ first. You may not have those other wants, but you have all you’ll need and desire in Him.
