“Be appalled, O heavens, at this; be shocked, be utterly desolate, declares the LORD, for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.” Jeremiah 2:12-13
I’m not sure why I continue to be surprised when an idol is exposed in my heart. Most of us, even as Christians, find ourselves to be confronted with our little idols daily. When we really think about it, we’re not so different from the Israelites in the Old Testament, though we like to think we are.
In the book of Jeremiah, we see that God’s people were chasing after idols. They were serving the counterfeit “gods” of the culture around them. And yet, they still sought to bring sacrifices to the One True God. But because they had “hewed out cisterns for themselves” and “forsaken the fountain of living waters”, their sacrifices were rejected.
God wants our hearts in their fullness. He deserves all of our praise and adoration. The idols we allow to sit on His throne are like broken cisterns that hold no water. They are pointless—worthless. Let us cast them away and seek to serve with our entire being the One True God.
He is the only one who satisfies us with living water.
Father, help us to rid ourselves of the idols in our hearts. Reveal them to us, convict us of them, and give us grace to repent, honoring You as the only God of this world and Lord over our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Ask the Lord to reveal any idols which may be fighting to take His place in your heart.
