Freedom in Christ
The Psalmist has a curious saying here. I’m earnestly following Your rules, because You’ve set me free. Wait a sec. Rules equal restriction, confinement, and unhappiness, right? A sinful attitude views rules as a nuisance or “necessary evil.” Our orderly and perfect God set down His law to show us that first, He is holy and we are not, and second the rules are there for our benefit and protection so we can lovingly and rightly interact with Him and our fellow human beings. It may be strange to consider, but God’s rules do make us free, but we only view them as life-giving and glorious after we trust in Christ. He changes our hearts to want to do what is right instead of chasing our selfish, ultimately destructive desires (Jeremiah 17:9). Even with a changed heart, we will still have a lot to learn. The Holy Spirit through the Word teaches us how to see the beauty of God’s commands, and we grow in our delight in Him.
I’m free to be a rule-follower? We don’t lose our individuality when we submit to the Lord. Rather, we become more how humanity was created to be in the beginning—in unbroken fellowship with the Father, loving Him and displaying His marvelous ways to a watching world.
