Dear Lazy Christian

August 7, 2018 by i5lwl

“By faith Moses…refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.” Hebrews 11:24-26

Reflect

Discipline: one of the hardest traits to acquire as a Christian in my opinion. Even setting 15 minutes aside and devoting it to the Lord is challenging—there’s excuse after excuse, and day-to-day activities always seem to take precedence over spending time in the Word or praying. I find it extremely hard to sit down and devote myself to God; instead, my heart gravitates towards laziness and convenience.

What I have realized in spiritual discipline is understanding the affections of our hearts. We neglect our Bibles in order to spend hours watching Netflix. Why? Because we would rather do what’s convenient for ourselves, not what will strive us towards holiness. Our sinful nature grabs a hold of us, and instead of keeping our eyes on His promises, we become comfortable in the lies of the world.

Moses chose God rather than sin; he kept his eyes on the prize of Heaven and disciplined himself in his walk with God…not because he felt forced to, but because his heart desired to honor God in every aspect of his life. As Christians, we should strive for the same. As Charles Spurgeon puts it, “It is not enough to do the correct thing; it must be done in a right spirit, and with a pure motive…”

We have to pray that God will take our laziness and turn it into motivation to be disciplined in every aspect of our lives.

Pray

Lord, forgive me of my laziness and lack of discipline in my walk with You. Whatever it takes, discipline me for Your glory and for my good, that I may strive for holiness and bear the fruit of righteousness.

Your Turn

How can you be more disciplined in your Christian walk?
